It was once unthinkable that Jaguar would ever produce an SUV. Then along came the F-Pace.

The F-Pace marks Jaguar’s inauguration into the world of higher-riding cars—and to this it remains the biggest model in its range.

The F-Pace sits above both the E-Pace family SUV and I-Pace electric SUV. It’s been Jaguar’s bestseller since its release in 2016, and a midlife refresh saw the introduction of a bigger grille, heavily revised interior, reprofiled bodywork, and slim front and rear LED lights.

The F-Pace’s engine lineup comprises a range of mild-hybrid petrols and diesels, along with a full plugin hybrid which could save you a small fortune in company car tax. And if it’s speed you’re seeking, you’ll want to check out the V8-powered SVR performance variant.

Diehard fans of old-school Jaguar saloons might be sceptical of the F-Pace at first, but this branching out did make total sense for the brand. Especially given that it’s part of Jaguar Land Rover and has been able to lean on Land Rover’s unparallelled expertise in SUVs.

Equipment, options and extras

The entry-level R-Dynamic S brings adaptive cruise control, power-folding door mirrors, two-zone climate control, 19in alloy wheels, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and heated front seats and windscreen. That’s way more kit as standard than is brought by the entry-level Porsche Macan, one of the F-Pace’s key rivals.

Moving up the trims, the R-Dynamic SE Black adds luxuries like 20in wheels, privacy glass and keyless entry, and the R-Dynamic HSE Black brings 21in wheels, Windsor leather, and ventilated massaging front seats.

Finally, the top-spec 400 Sport introduces the P400 engine, as well as 22in wheels and leather performance seats.

Costs, insurance groups, mpg and CO2

The F-Pace undercuts most of its premium SUV rivals, especially if you go for the entry-level R-Dynamic S.

Our favourite engine is the D200, slightly pricier than the equivalent Audi Q5 40 TDI S line but cheaper than a BMW X3 xDrive20d M Sports and Mercedes GLC 220d AMG line. But if you want the F-Pace’s top-spec 400 Sport, that’s more expensive than the X3 M40i and Porsche Macan S, although does include more kit as standard.

Few cars in the class hold onto their value as well as the Macan—but the F-Pace is one of them. In fact, it’s predicted to depreciate more slowly than the Q5—although not quite as slowly as the X3 and GLC. Even so, its strong resale values will help keep PCP finance payments competitive.

Company car drivers will love the P400e plugin hybrid by virtue of its sitting in a lower tax bracket. Just make sure it’s charged regularly to avoid expensive petrol bills—it takes 30 minutes to charge from 0 to 80% on a 50kW charger.

And if you don’t have anywhere to charge a plugin hybrid, it might be worth checking out the D200 diesel, which averages 45mpg and so might be cheaper to run.

Safety and security

Euro NCAP scored the F-Pace five stars for safety, and it performed as well as the BMW X3 for adult, child and pedestrian safety, although marginally worse than the Volvo XC60 for adult and child crash protection.

Every F-Pace comes with automatic emergency braking, rear collision monitor, a driver attention monitoring system and a lane-departure warning system as standard. The R-Dynamic SE Black brings blind spot monitoring, reverse traffic detection and a clear exit monitor, while the R-Dynamic HSE Black features a rear collision monitor. These safety systems are also available on lesser trims as part of the Driver Assist Pack.

Reliability

Every Jaguar comes with a 3-year unlimited-mileage warranty as standard. You can extend this if you’re willing to pay extra, and you can add MOT cover for a small fee.

Finally, it’s worth noting that the battery in the P400e plugin hybrid is covered for 8 years and is valid for up to 100,000 miles.

The Car Planet verdict

The Jaguar F-Pace balances superb driving dynamics, plush interiors, and a generous raft of standard kit. While other SUVs are more spacious, refined and comfortable, we still prefer the F-Pace as a private buy.
